Passage’s Process

Passage is an academic journal, and we use double peer review.

We do not charge any fees for publishing with us.

A successful paper will go through several stages of both quality and fit control:

  1. Proposals are received and considered by the editorial team.

  2. Those that seem to best fit both the theme of the on-going call, and Passage’s criteria are accepted for full submission.

  3. Once these submissions are in, they are read by the editorial team.

  4. If the pieces do not fit the creative-critical criteria, or do not meet a minimal academic standard, the pieces are turned down.

  5. The submissions that pass the editorial filter move on to peer review.

  6. Once they are peer reviewed, they are returned to the authors with one of the following recommendations:

    1. Publish as is (very rare).

    2. Publish with minor edits.

    3. Publish with major edits.

    4. Do not publish.

  7. Papers are then edited accordingly by the authors, and resubmitted.

  8. The editorial team reads re-submissions.

    1. If all is as expected, the pieces move on to copy-editing.

    2. If not, the editorial team engages the author in trying to find a solution that works for all parties.

      1. If a solution is found, the piece moves on to copy-editing.

  9. Authors handle the copy suggestions.

  10. Passage editors move on to publication.

After publication, authors are welcome to deposit any versions of their work (submitted, accepted, or published) in an institutional or other repository of their choice.

We understand this process can lead to disappointment, since there are repeated opportunities for rejection. It is not a perfect process, but it tries to be mindful of everyone’s time (not asking for papers straight-away, not asking for reviews of pieces do not meet the basic criteria, etc.).

We thank all authors at all stages for trusting us to read their work.
